March 1, 2007, after forty years of distinguishing itself as one of
the leading manufacturers of quality performance sport boats in the
nation, Checkmate Powerboats was acquired by former owner/founder/ president
of Baja Boats, Doug Smith.
I've never lost my love or enthusiasm for the boating business. The
timing was just right for Bill Combs and myself to reach this agreement.
After four decades at the helm, Bill was ready to move on, and I was
anxious to accept a new challenge. I think recreational boating is ready
for some new ideas, direction and products, and I can't think of a better
platform upon which to launch from than the solid foundation of the
Checkmate reputation and excellent products.
In the months and
years ahead, Checkmate will dedicate its energy, talent and resources
to building exceptional sport boats in regard to design, construction,
quality, performance and value to the customer. Our hulls will continue
to be one-hundred percent hand-layed construction and our refined running
surfaces the most efficient in the industry. You will also see luxurious
new interiors and a dazzling selection of contemporary graphic upgrades
to enhance the styling of our latest models.

is one of the oldest and most respected names in the marine industry,
and now it's poised to enter a brand new era. I personally invite Checkmate
